Application-Oriented Hydrogen Research Presented at HANNOVER MESSE

At HANNOVER MESSE, the ZBT demonstrated how applied research is supporting the growth of the hydrogen economy by showcasing its latest research and development work in the fields of electrolysis, hydrogen infrastructure, and fuel cell technology.

The focus was on technologies that accelerate the transfer of scientific findings into industrial applications and contribute to the further development of a high-performance hydrogen economy.

Membrane Electrolysis: Increasing Efficiency, Reducing Costs

A key focus of the exhibition was membrane electrolysis (PEM and AEM). The institute’s research includes the development and characterisation of cell components and stacks, as well as the investigation of degradation mechanisms and aging processes. The goal is to improve the performance and service life of electrolysis systems while simultaneously reducing costs. To this end, research is being conducted, among other things, to reduce the precious metal content in the catalyst layers without compromising the systems’ performance.

High-flow hydrogen refueling for heavy-duty commercial vehicles

Another topic was hydrogen refueling for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. As part of the international RHeaDHy research project, the institute is working with its project partners to develop and test high-flow refueling systems that enable short refueling times at high hydrogen flow rates. In addition to validating the corresponding refueling protocols, a research infrastructure is being established at the institute’s own hydrogen test facility, which will allow the interaction of all relevant system components to be analysed and further developed under real-world conditions.

Research Developments and Demonstrators

In addition, selected developments from ongoing research projects were presented. These included fuel cell stacks, innovative components for electrolysis and fuel cell systems, the HySaM hydrogen sampling system for analysing hydrogen quality at refueling stations, and a model of an ammonia cracker for mobile applications.

Exchanges and Collaborations

The HANNOVER MESSE also provided an opportunity to discuss the latest research findings with experts from academia and industry, to strengthen existing collaborations, and to initiate new partnerships. The institute’s presence at the trade show underscored its role as a partner for application-oriented research and development across the entire value chain of hydrogen technologies.

From the development and characterisation of components to testing and analytical services, and the joint realisation of research and development projects, the institute supports companies and research institutions across the entire hydrogen technology value chain.
