ZBT scientist Dr. Ulrich Gardemann presented the results of the project “Setup and Operation of a Power to Gas Demonstration Platform” on a poster at the DECHEMA FORUM in Friedrichshafen.
Power-to-gas demonstration platform
The requirements for PtG technologies in terms of flexibility and integration in an industry-related environment are high. What potential lies dormant here in the context of renewable energies, sector coupling and hydrogen derivatives?
In the project, a power-to-gas demonstration platform was set up and operated that combines established and innovative technologies such as photovoltaics, electrolysis, direct CO2 capture from the air and chemical methanation in a plant network. One specific R&D topic was the further development of ZBT’s own methanation technology. The accompanying modeling and simulation should enable the transfer of different configurations of process chains and operating strategies to other locations, scales and conditions.
The results support the evaluation and optimisation of future energy systems with a high proportion of renewable energies, but also highlight the need for further research and development. The methods developed enable the transfer to different use cases and scaling.
