Electrolysis test rig inspected by TÜV and put into full operation

The ZBT has successfully validated a new 40-kW test bench for PEM water electrolysis for pressurized operation.

The associated pressure vessel system has now been inspected and approved by TÜV for initial commissioning. The inspection was based on the requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive and TRBS 1201, Part 2.

Testing capabilities available for customers and project partners

The test bench enables long-term testing of PEM electrolysis stacks for up to 5,000 operating hours. Stacks with a power output of up to 40 kilowatts at a maximum of 2,000 amperes and 20 volts can be tested. Operating conditions of up to 90 degrees Celsius and 36 bar allow for realistic testing under demanding pressure and temperature conditions.

The facility is now available for testing assignments as well as for research and development projects. Initial tests for customers and project partners are already underway. Among other things , the facility can be used to investigate the performance, efficiency, aging, degradation, and long-term stability of PEM electrolysis stacks and their components.

Electrolysis at the ZBT

We conduct research and development on components and systems for PEM and AEM water electrolysis —from catalysts, membranes, and cell components to complete stacks. This includes performance and stress analyses, accelerated aging tests (AST), and service life studies under realistic operating conditions. Here you can learn more about our research and testing capabilities.

The ZBT as a Partner in the Development of Hydrogen Technologies

We support companies and research institutions in the following areas, among others:

  • the qualification of materials and components
  • Performance, Stability, and Degradation Studies
  • the development of customer-specific test methods and test setups
  • Gas, Pollutant, and Material Analyses
  • the modeling and evaluation of cells, stacks, and systems

Our unique approach: We don’t view issues from just a single perspective. ZBT combines expertise in materials, components, cells, stacks, and systems, and evaluates results in terms of performance, efficiency, aging, and service life.

We work independently, confidentially, and with a flexible, customizable infrastructure. After all, complex development issues often cannot be resolved with a standard test.
