ZBT Expands Its Analytical Capabilities with an HPLC-QTOF Mass Spectrometer

The ZBT is expanding its analytical capabilities for testing PFAS and other organic pollutants.

As part of the HyQualityLab4NRW project, a high-resolution HPLC-QTOF mass spectrometer from Shimadzu is being procured for the ZBT’s Hy-Lab hydrogen quality laboratory to analyse hydrogen samples for PFAS and other organic contaminants. Delivery is scheduled for calendar week 40.

Conducting Precise Analyses of Known and Unknown PFAS

The new system enables both the precise quantification of known compounds and the screening of suspect and non-target compounds. This will allow us to detect and identify previously unknown PFAS species in the future, in addition to routine PFAS analysis, such as for PFAS-20 and PFAS-4.

This advanced analytical method is particularly relevant for studying ionomer degradation in fuel cells and electrolysers. It helps recognise degradation products, better understand degradation mechanisms, and more comprehensively assess potential contaminant inputs.
