FDFC 2026 – Improved Mn-based catalysts for electrolysis

Can manganese oxides, which are abundant in the earth, withstand the harsh, acidic environment of PEM water electrolysis?

At the “Fundamentals & Developments of Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers” (FDFC 2026) conference in Montpellier, France, Dr Vimanshu Chanda presented our recent work: We combined operando spectroscopy with electrochemical analysis to investigate how the co-engineering of Nb/F cations and anions modifies the electronic structure of MnO₂ under the acidic conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in PEM electrolysers.

Beyond improving activity, tracking the evolution of the electronic structure of Mn during operation provided important insights. Furthermore, we were able to demonstrate how the suppression of over-oxidation through targeted modulation of the electronic structure leads to improved durability of Mn-based electrocatalysts in a 5 cm² PEM electrolysis cell.
