The Institute

The ZBT is one of Europe’s leading research institutes for fuel cells, hydrogen technologies and electrolysis processes. The ZBT is a sought-after research and development partner in European and national cutting-edge research and in industrial projects focussing on automotive applications and stationary energy generation.

From molecular structures to parts and components to entire systems, from the production of green hydrogen to refuelling and reconversion to electricity, from prototypes to small series and mass production – with our application-oriented research and development, we form a bridge between basic university research and industry, and the ZBT is a sought-after research and development partner in European and national top-level research and in industrial projects with a focus on automotive applications and stationary energy generation.

Independent Institute

The ZBT operates as a independent non-profit limited company. The University of Duisburg-Essen has been the sole shareholder since 2005.

Equipment

Our approximately 180 employees have access to an outstanding technical infrastructure, which includes powerful testing facilities, chemical laboratories and high-tech analytics.

Our research

We stand for application-orientated cutting-edge research into hydrogen, fuel cells and electrolysis.

The ZBT – the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Center in Duisburg conducts application-oriented research on hydrogen-related topics, thus building a bridge between fundamental research and industry.

For more than 20 years, the ZBT has stood for research at the highest scientific level. Every day, more than 100 scientists work here to advance the current state of science towards the future. This has made the ZBT one of the leading institutions for hydrogen, fuel cell and electrolysis research in Germany and Europe for many years.
