Hydrogen in Focus: From Research to Application

Two interviews from the H2Raum blog series offer insights into research and science management at the ZBT.

How does hydrogen reach its point of use reliably, safely and cost-effectively? In this interview, Christian Spitta discusses hydrogen quality, refuelling stations, transport solutions and the so-called ‘last mile’ of hydrogen supply. He also explains why the Ruhr region, with its industry, infrastructure and high energy demand, offers particularly favourable conditions for establishing a hydrogen economy.

Advancing and communicating science

The focus is on scientific quality, professional development and exchange. It is also about raising the profile of research, presenting scientific content in an accessible way and fostering dialogue with different target groups.

Hydrogen quality along the supply chain

Different requirements apply to the purity of hydrogen depending on the application. At the ZBT, analysis and purification concepts are therefore being investigated and further developed. The Hy-Lab offers specialised facilities for analysing hydrogen quality.

Testing refuelling stations under realistic conditions

Filling plants and hydrogen refuelling stations are also key areas of research. At the hydrogen test site, plants and components can be examined on a 1:1 scale, and refuelling processes can be tested under realistic conditions.

The last mile of hydrogen supply

From mobile storage systems to regional supply concepts: for the last mile, technical, safety-related and regulatory requirements must be considered together. The Ruhr region in particular, with its industry, logistics and high energy demand, offers good conditions for such applications.

Good scientific practice at the ZBT

Application-oriented research is characterised by projects, milestones and collaboration with partners. At the same time, methodological rigour, robust evidence and transparent scientific processes remain central prerequisites for good research.

Research management supports this through advice, training, information resources and shared standards.

A space for scientific exchange

Through the ZBT Research School, the institute creates a space for exchange between researchers from different departments. Research projects, progress on PhD theses and current scientific publications are discussed in regular seminars. The programme also includes the Journal Club, where current specialist literature is discussed collectively.

This fosters connections across project and departmental boundaries.
