Three ZBT researchers present their latest work at a conference in Helsinki

Three ZBT doctoral students presented the results of their current research at an international conference in Helsinki.

ZBT doctoral students Florian Dennewitz, Julian Kapp, and Bastian Kaufmann presented their latest research findings at the 42nd Topical Meeting, “Sustainable Electrochemical Materials for Energy Applications: Theory and Practice,” in Helsinki. Organized by the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) at Aalto University, the conference provided an international platform for discussing current developments in electrochemical research.

Practical Research Focus Areas

The papers presented address key issues in hydrogen technologies and examine practical challenges at the intersections of materials science, electrochemistry, and simulation.

At the same time, they highlight the ZBT’s research and development capabilities in the areas of modeling and simulation, measurement and testing methods , and development services.

The focus was on:

  • the optimization of simulations of degradation processes in fuel cells,
  • the characterisation of corrosion in metallic bipolar plates under acidic conditions, as well as
  • the development of new experimental methods for AEM electrolysis

International Exchange and New Ideas

The conference offered a wide range of opportunities for professional exchange with researchers from around the world and for discussing new scientific findings in the field of sustainable electrochemical materials for energy applications. For the three ZBT researchers, participating in the conference was also a valuable opportunity to present their research to an international audience of experts and to gain new insights for their work.

Modeling & Simulation – Our Services

Using physics-based models and simulation-driven approaches, we analyse transport and reaction processes along the hydrogen value chain—from porous materials through the cell to the entire plant. Our models help us understand systems, identify weak points, and efficiently develop new solutions.

We model electrochemical systems on various scales—from microscopic multiphase flow in porous media to the interaction of different modules within systems involving complex drive and conversion processes.

Simulation-based analyses help us evaluate hydrogen systems holistically—from individual components to the entire plant. We utilise process simulations, variant analyses, and dynamic models to optimize operating points, validate new concepts, and examine complex plant configurations.
