Researching together: ZBT and IUTA for the energy transition

Two research institutes from Duisburg: ZBT and IUTA explore opportunities for collaboration.

The fields of activity of the two Duisburg research institutes ZBT and IUTA – The Institute for Environment & Energy, Technology & Analytics complement each other surprisingly well, as the representatives of the two member institutes of the Johannes Rau Research Association recently discovered at an exploratory meeting.

There are plenty of approaches for cooperation and topics for joint research projects:

  • Material qualification for hydrogen applications to address pressing issues faced by industrial companies and gas network operators (e.g. hydrogen slip prevention, hydrogen embrittlement, seals)
  • Ammonia combustion – ZBT before combustion (handling, cracking), IUTA after combustion (denitrification)
  • Hydrogen storage (sector coupling, seasonal heat storage)
  • Further development of sensor technology for hydrogen purity and material characterisation

The next steps have been discussed and contacts are being intensified. We are looking forward to it and will stay tuned together!
