HySPORT – simulated height

Field testing of fuel cell based high altitude training successfull

Together with the partners N2Telligence, HyCologne and Air Products, ZBT has finished the project “HySPORT”. Goal of the project was the development of a fuel cell system which is not used for energy supply but for supplying oxygen reduced breathing air. The field test within the sports-region of Cologne was successfully performed.

Since the 1970s different technologies for height training of athletes in lowlands have been developed based on vacuum chambers or reducing the oxygen level at normatic pressure. Standard systems have a high noise emission and very dry breathing air. Using the oxygen reduced cathode off gas of a fuel cell system therefore offers significant advantages.

The HySPORT fuel cell systems have been developed and optimized within the 2 years project by ZBT. The direct contact of the product gases to the athletes resulted in challenging security efforts to enshure a safe operation for the humans. Various steps of certification and approval have been fulfilled successfully.
