Fuel Processor for SOFC CHP system

50%-plus Technology

Within the IGF project 16638: “Weiterentwicklung des Konzeptes der partiellen Anodenabgas-Rückführung (AAGR) für propanbetriebene SOFC-Brennstoffzellen-Systeme” a fuel processor for high efficient SOFC CHP systems has been developed.

The process concept includes a partial anode-offgas recycling and a combined dry and steam reforming. An ISM (sunfire GmbH) has been implemented as SOFC stack. As components of the fuel processor a convectively heated reformer and an adiabatic burner have been developed. In parallel the construction and packaging for the hot gas components (injector, reformer and burner) has been developed.

Results of single component and system tests:

  • Reformate gas corresponds with the thermo dynamical equilibrium in POX and AAGR operation
  • Synthetic gas content (CO and H2) in reformate gas up to 85 %
  • Reformer pressure drop below 5 mbar and reformer temperature above 800 °C
  • CO and H2 emissions in the exhaust gas below 10 ppm

Overall system performance:

  • Electrical power output: 866 W
  • Gross electrical efficiency: 56 %
    (at R = 6-7, FU = 75 % & use of ESC2 cells)
