First day of school: ZBT Research School kicked-off

The ZBT Research School, a type of graduate programme, has 23 students and has now started with a kick-off workshop. The aim is to train, support and network the participants in order to promote excellent science in the field of hydrogen technologies.

The members of the new ZBT Research School already know each other, but came together as a class for the first time at the kick-off workshop. School Director Theresa Schredelseker hosted the school day. And Co-Principal Prof. Dr Harry Hoster mingled with the students.

Principal Schredelseker: “After months of preparation, we are finally getting started! I’m looking forward to connecting our researchers both internally and externally through the Research School to promote excellent science in the field of hydrogen technologies!”

The Research School aims to focus on the specific needs of its members. In group work, the scientists were therefore able to actively contribute to the organisation of future activities:

  • weekly seminar
  • annual retreat
  • annual symposium
  • workshops and training sessions
  • support with publishing
  • peer mentoring programme for doctoral students
  • and regular celebrations and ceremonies to honour the successes of the student body

The 23 “students” come from all seven scientific departments of ZBT and are at different career stages:

  • experienced scientists with and without a doctoral degree
  • doctoral students
  • student assistants in Master’s degree programmes

First Writing Retreat

A short time later, on St. Nicholas Day, the organizers of the ZBT Research School also hosted the first ZBT Writing Retreat. At this event, (prospective) researchers dedicated an entire day to developing their manuscripts. They were supported with advice and a lecture by Prof. Dr. Gabi Schierning from the Research Center „Future Energy Materials and Systems“, with feedback from Prof. Dr. Harry Hoster, Scientific Director of the ZBT and Chair of Energy Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen, and an internal „peer review“ round. Special thanks go to Dr. Theresa Schredelseker for organizing and leading the workshop.
