Fuel Cells

Fuel cells generate electricity from hydrogen. They are used for many applications in clean mobility and logistics as well as in secure energy supply.

ZBT stands for comprehensive expertise in the development, design and qualification of components, materials and production processes related to fuel cells. In addition, ZBT offers practical system solutions for hydrogen technologies.

A particular focus is placed on all levels of the technological value chain – especially polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells – from materials research to system integration.

Membrane Electrode Assemblies

The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) forms the heart of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM-FC). It is here that chemical energy is converted into electrical energy. We analyse electrochemical processes in fuel cells and characterise their components, such as catalysts, polymers, membranes and gas diffusion layers (GDS), using physical and chemical methods.

Bipolar Plates and Seals

We develop materials for bipolar plates and gaskets as well as innovative manufacturing processes to create sustainable solutions for fuel cell stacks.

We also actively support customers and partners in the development and production of high-performance bipolar plate and gasket solutions.

Stack Technologies

As part of research projects and industrial collaborations, we work with our partners to develop innovative and high-performance fuel cell stacks. These are used in mobile, stationary and portable applications and make an important contribution to the further development of sustainable energy solutions.
