ZBT is working with partner institutes on innovative materials that will make fuel cells even more sustainable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Fuel cells are considered a clean way to generate electricity. But many components of fuel cell stacks are made from petroleum or other energy-intensive or problematic materials. The just launched lead technology overall project\u00a0<b>Biobased Fuel Cells (FC_Bio)<\/b>\u00a0aims to substitute conventional petroleum-based materials in fuel cell technology with\u00a0<b>renewable raw materials<\/b>. Through the use of innovative adhesive joining processes, the focus is also to be on improving economic production in order to promote the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"image\">\n        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1856\" height=\"1312\" src=\"https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack.jpg 1856w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack-1536x1086.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/02\/projekt-fc-bio-stack-1320x933.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1856px) 100vw, 1856px\" \/>\n    \n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"text-teaser text-teaser--white\">\n  <h2 class=\"text-teaser__heading\"><\/h2>\n  <div class=\"text-teaser__text\"><div class=\"news-text-wrap\">\n<div class=\"news-text-wrap\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">To achieve the overall goal, the three research institutes involved are concentrating their core competencies: The Institut f\u00fcr F\u00fcge- und Schwei\u00dftechnik (Institute for Joining and Welding Technology) of the Technical University of Braunschweig (project coordinator) is responsible for\u00a0<b>adhesive and joining technology<\/b>, the Fraunhofer Institut f\u00fcr Holzforschung Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut (Institute for Wood Research) focuses on\u00a0<b>material development of biobased materials<\/b>, and the ZBT &#8211; THE HYDROGEN AND FUEL CELL CENTER will take the lead in material development as well as\u00a0<b>measurement and testing technologies<\/b>\u00a0in the field of fuel cell development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The overall project Biobased Fuel Cells is divided into\u00a0<b>four subprojects<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Subproject 1 &#8211; Joint and Function<\/b>\u00a0represents the process engineering part of the overall project, taking into account the material-specific requirements.<\/li>\n<li><b>Subproject 2 &#8211; Wooden Endplate<\/b>\u00a0deals with the material development of the endplates. Endplates made from high-performance wood materials potentially have a lower weight than conventional metallic endplates, and the insulating plate previously required is no longer necessary.<\/li>\n<li><b>Subproject 3 &#8211; Compound and Filler<\/b>\u00a0deals with bio-based alternatives to the previously petroleum-based bipolar half-plates and with alternative fillers.<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0<b>subproject 4<\/b>\u00a0<b>&#8211; Adhesives<\/b>, bio-based adhesives and sealants are being developed for the possible joints within a fuel cell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Green hydrogen and emission-free operation will hopefully soon be joined by\u00a0<b>sustainably produced biofuel cells<\/b>.
