The aim is to develop versatile and cost-effective fuel cells. Duisburg has been one of the most important German locations for the development of fuel cells for years. These can generate electricity from renewable hydrogen. The three-year project will investigate how fuel cells can be mass-produced at low cost.    <\/p>\n<p><b>WDR 2 Radio &#8211; Studio Essen &#8211; Rhein und Ruhr aktuell<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Essen\/Duisburg: Fuel cell project starts<\/b><\/p>\n<p>NRW Minister of Economic Affairs Christa Thoben is launching a new research project this morning at the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology ZBT at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The aim is to develop versatile and cost-effective fuel cells. Duisburg has been one of the most important German locations for the development of fuel cells for years. These cells can generate electricity from renewable hydrogen. Over the next three years, the project will focus on the question of how fuel cells can be mass-produced at low cost. In practice, they are used, for example, in stationary power supplies and as batteries for electric cars. The ZBT is working closely with a Canadian research institute on the project. The aim is to open up NRW as a fuel cell location for the North American economic area.       <\/p>\n<p><b>Radio Duisburg:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Thursday, 07 January 2010 &#8211; 16:37<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Fuel Cell Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen has received approval for around 400,000 euros from the state of NRW.<br \/>\nNRW Minister of Economic Affairs Christa Thoben handed over the corresponding notification to the centre today. The money will go towards the HiPerLoco project.<br \/>\nHiPerLoco means High Performance Low Cost &#8211; in other words, an important new development is to be driven forward for little money. The aim is to develop a 10-kilogramme fuel cell. This cell can be fuelled with hydrogen. When the hydrogen is burnt, energy is produced that is completely free of pollutants. Clean, quiet cars or low-emission industry are therefore no longer an unthinkable vision of the future. This project was so important to the state that the money was approved without the centre having to compete with other projects.<br \/>\nThe ZBT project is scheduled to run for three years and is being carried out in cooperation with a Canadian institute.<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\nRadio Duisburg:<\/p>\n<p>NRW Minister of Economic Affairs Christa Thoben is visiting the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology, ZBT, at the University of Duisburg-Essen today.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Thoben will hand over the approval notice for the so-called HiPerLoCo project for the development of versatile, low-cost fuel cells.<\/p>\n<p>The ZBT will work closely with a renowned Canadian research institute. Materials and scientists are to be exchanged in order to achieve direct further training in the various technologies. At the same time, NRW will be developed as a fuel cell location for the North American economic area.
