{"id":6137,"date":"2010-01-20T14:35:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-20T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prod.zbt.compositas.io\/?post_type=news&#038;p=6137"},"modified":"2025-02-13T14:36:21","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T14:36:21","slug":"german-canadian-fuel-cell-project-under-way-at-zbt","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/zbt.de\/en\/news\/german-canadian-fuel-cell-project-under-way-at-zbt\/","title":{"rendered":"German-Canadian fuel cell project under way at ZBT"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"text-teaser text-teaser--white\">\n  <h2 class=\"text-teaser__heading\">German-Canadian fuel cell project under way at ZBT<\/h2>\n  <div class=\"text-teaser__text\"><div class=\"teaser-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The ZBT Center for Fuel Cell Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany has been awarded \u20ac380 000 (US$535 000) for its HiPerLoCo project, on the Development of High Performance and Low-Cost PEM Fuel Cells.<\/p>\n<p><b>Renewable\u00a0Energy Focus<\/b>\u00a0ZBT will collaborate with the National Research<br \/>\nCouncil Canada \u2013 Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation (NRC-IFCI) in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>The project is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy for<br \/>\nthe German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW), under the NRW-EU<br \/>\nObjective 2 program. The award is part of the state government\u2019s support for<br \/>\nthe development of versatile, low-cost polymer electroloyte membrane<br \/>\n(PEM) fuel cells that could be used in the future for power generation or in<br \/>\ntransportation.<\/p>\n<p>ZBT will work closely with the NRC-IFCI, a leading fuel cell research center.<br \/>\nThe international cooperation aims to exchange materials and scientists,<br \/>\nand to enhance knowledge in a variety of technologies and processes.<br \/>\nThe project will in parallel develop NRW as a focal point for the North<br \/>\nAmerican fuel cell sector. The technical and scientific exchange will be<br \/>\nboosted through the involvement of companies in the NRW region, to create<br \/>\nand consolidate jobs in research and industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Over the next three years, using mass production techniques, we will<br \/>\nexplore in the project how to create versatile, practical, low-cost fuel cell<br \/>\nsystems,\u2019 says ZBT Director, Professor Dr Angelika Heinzel. \u2018Applications<br \/>\ninclude, for example, mobile drive applications with battery hybrid<br \/>\ntechnologies, as well as stationary power generation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The project focus is technology development for system components and<br \/>\noperational performance in the 5\u201310 kW range. Of particular interest are<br \/>\nmobile power applications with battery hybrid technologies.<br \/>\nThis ties in with the Electric Mobility Strategy of the EnergieRegion.NRW, in<br \/>\nwhich batteries and fuel cells are seen as complementary technologies.<br \/>\nOther activities within this strategy in the Rhine-Ruhr electric mobility region<br \/>\ncan also benefit from this project. In addition, stationary applications for<br \/>\nhigh-quality power supply (e.g. UPS systems) will be optimized.<br \/>\nThe ZBT Center for Fuel Cell Technology provides services in applied<br \/>\nresearch, development and innovation. Its scientific and technical<br \/>\ndepartments are conducting industry-related fuel cell research.
