This happens when a fuel cell stack supports the cyclist when pedalling, the employer is a hydrogen research institute and the people on site are hydrogen, fuel cell and electrolysis experts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n                            <div class=\"intro-grid__text\"><p>Cycling to work \u2013 that&#8217;s not really special. It&#8217;s a different story when the rider works at ZBT and the bike has a\u00a0<b>hydrogen drive<\/b>. It comes with an electrolyser for use at home and a metal hydride storage unit for the hydrogen supply.<\/p>\n<h4>Refuelling with Home-Electrolyser<\/h4>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">After thoroughly studying the operating instructions with the help of an online translation tool, as they are written exclusively in Chinese, he was able to successfully fill the storage tank with the intended 20 grams of hydrogen in around 6 hours using the\u00a0<b>home electrolyser<\/b>. It doesn&#8217;t sound like much, but according to the manufacturer, it&#8217;s enough for up to 60 kilometres of electric assistance when cycling.<\/p>\n<h4>Impressions from the Test Drive<\/h4>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">And then some of my colleagues, who are under or not too far over the maximum permitted rider weight of 75 kg, set off on short<b>\u00a0test rides<\/b>. And what can we say: the bike runs and the fuel cell supplies power for the electric motor. The manu\u00adfacturer promises an astonishing 5-year warranty on the fuel cell stack. The workmanship with some sharp edges is not entirely convincing, and the components on the bike side are \u2018rather cheap\u2019 overall, according to the bike-savvy part of the staff, but there are also products from well-known manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Our\u00a0<b>bike, including electrolyser and storage unit<\/b>, was priced in the range of significantly higher-quality branded e-bikes. (However, the supplier has increased the price significantly in the meantime.) A quick search revealed that the bike is sold in China at an astonishingly favourable price. If the production costs for the components of the fuel cell system and the electrolyser continue to fall, we think that the prices could be competitive in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The fuel cell bike is similar in weight to an e-bike with a battery pack. But it would probably be impractical for longer journeys. The electrolyser is definitely too bulky and too heavy to take with you. Two or three bottles in your luggage would probably be the maximum.<\/p>\n<h4>Bike-sharing or Bottle Swap System?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">In principle, you could of course imagine bike-sharing providers offering bottle swaps at their stations in the future. Or an exchange system in shops similar to the cartridges for sparkling water makers. This could then also be used to supply other applications with energy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">At the moment, in our part of the world a bike like this is probably more of a\u00a0<b>gadget for hydrogen technology enthusiasts<\/b>. It appears that there is already a bike-sharing system with these fuel cell bikes on the Chinese market. How far this has already been implemented and how widespread the bikes are there, however, is beyond our knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\"><b>Our conclusion<\/b>: This fuel cell bike certainly still has room for improvement. But we are pleased that the technology obviously works and that the\u00a0<b>production costs<\/b>\u00a0for the components have taken the right direction: downhill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\"><b>And now?<\/b>\u00a0It&#8217;s easy to imagine what happens to a bike like this that ends up in the hands of our researchers. \u2018We&#8217;ll leave it like this for a while, it can be used for test rides
