ZBT presentation on ammonia production at the SDEWES Conference in Dubrovnik<\/h1>\n

ZBT was represented by our scientist Elias Klarhorst at the 20th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems in Dubrovnik, Croatia. There he gave a presentation on \u2018Model-based analysis of absorption in ammonia production using renewable energies\u2019. <\/h4>\n

An alternative to Haber-Bosch?<\/h2>\n

Ammonia can be a useful intermediate product for the storage and transport of green hydrogen<\/strong>. Elias presented the results of an investigation into an alternative process to Haber-Bosch synthesis, based on the absorption of ammonia in metal halides<\/strong> under moderate conditions. <\/p>\n

The analysis used a dynamic process simulation model to compare condensation- and absorption-based separation for small decentralised synthesis plants. To ensure continuous operation, two absorption units were modelled in alternating operation. The analysis provides an energetic comparison of both processes<\/strong> (Haber-Bosch and absorption) and demonstrates the advantages of absorption in terms of flexibility and reduced pressure requirements. <\/p>\n

The results show that absorption-based separation can be a viable alternative<\/strong> to condensation for decentralised ammonia production at low pressures. It has the potential to improve the overall efficiency of the system at low reactor turnover rates. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n

The simulation model was developed as part of the projects CF06_3 and CF06_6<\/strong><\/a> in the CAMPFIRE AG<\/strong><\/a>-alliance and is being further optimized. Project partners are the ZBT – Center for Fuel Cell Technology, the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology<\/strong><\/a> (INP Greifswald) e.V. (infrastructure for pilot plant) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/strong><\/a> (KIT) (reactor design). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
