However, there is still room for reducing costs.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from <strong>ZBT<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fem-online.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>fem Research Institute<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ruhr University Bochum<\/strong><\/a> have made great strides in developing cost-effective and durable anodes for hydrogen production as part of a joint <strong>IGF-funded project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The performance improvement of the newly developed electrodes is based in particular on <strong>two key process steps<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Targeted integration of <strong>non-metallic elements<\/strong>, especially sulfur, into the <strong>nickel-based catalyst layers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Creation of <strong>defined nanostructures<\/strong> to increase the active surface area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <figure class=\"teaser-grid__figure\" dir=\"ltr\">\n                                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1518\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nickel-anode-teil2.jpg\" class=\"teaser-grid__image\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nickel-anode-teil2.jpg 1518w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nickel-anode-teil2-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nickel-anode-teil2-1024x729.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nickel-anode-teil2-768x546.jpg 768w, https:\/\/zbt.de\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nickel-anode-teil2-1320x939.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1518px) 100vw, 1518px\" \/>\n        <div class=\"flex teaser-grid__overlay teaser-grid__overlay--transparent\">\n                    <\/div>\n            <\/figure>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"teaser-grid teaser-grid--white\"\n    dir=\"rtl\">\n    <div class=\"teaser-grid__content\" dir=\"ltr\">\n        <h2 class=\"teaser-grid__heading\"><\/h2>\n        <div class=\"teaser-grid__text\"><p>The results show that the combination of nickel and sulfur creates a <strong>particularly active and corrosion-stable surface<\/strong> for oxygen evolution.<\/p>\n<p>The key properties of this material combination are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Active nickel hydroxide and nickel oxide hydroxide phases, which contribute significantly to OER in alkaline media<\/li>\n<li>Modification of the electronic structure of nickel by sulfur, which improves the adsorption of oxygen intermediates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This results in low overpotentials for OER and higher current densities.<br \/>\nThe <strong>key innovation<\/strong> lies in <strong>electrochemical deposition.<\/strong> This process allows <strong>precise control<\/strong> of the composition and structure of the catalyst layer.
